Monaco Private Tour from Villefranche: Eze, the Rock and Monte-Carlo, Back in Time for Your Ship
Yes, you can see Monaco privately from Villefranche-sur-Mer, and it is the day most of our cruise guests choose. Your local guide meets you at the Villefranche tender pier with a private luxury van, just for your party. Together you drive the corniche roads to Eze Village and on to Monaco: the Prince’s Palace on the Rock, Casino Square in Monte-Carlo and the views over Port Hercule. A sample half-day itinerary from the Villefranche pier
Every tour is private and fully customized. This is a realistic example for a morning arrival; your guide adjusts the order to your ship, the traffic and the day’s events.
- About 8:30 am: Villefranche tender pier. Your guide is waiting as you step ashore, and the van is parked close by.
- About 8:45 am: the Moyenne Corniche. The middle coast road climbs above the bay, with wide views back over Villefranche and Cap-Ferrat.
- About 9:00 am: Eze Village. Time to wander the lanes of the medieval village, perched about 430 meters above the sea, with an optional stop at a perfumery.
- About 10:45 am: Monaco, the Rock. The old town of Monaco-Ville and the Place du Palais, with its views over Port Hercule and Fontvieille.
- 11:55 am: Changing of the Guard. The Prince’s Carabiniers change the guard in front of the Prince’s Palace every day at 11:55 am, except in rain or for exceptional events.
- About 12:30 pm: Monte-Carlo. Casino Square, the Hôtel de Paris and the Café de Paris, part of the Formula One circuit, and the gardens above the harbor.
- About 1:15 pm: the Basse Corniche back along the sea. Through Cap d’Ail, Beaulieu-sur-Mer and, if you wish, a short loop around Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
- About 1:30 pm: back at the Villefranche pier, with plenty of margin before the last tender.
On a full day of about 8 hours there is time for a long lunch in Monaco or Eze, a visit inside the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on Cap-Ferrat, or a stroll in the Old Town of Nice.
Cruise timing and all-aboard
Villefranche is a tender port: ships anchor in the bay and guests come ashore by tender. The crossing is short, but waiting for a tender, especially first thing in the morning and for the last boats of the afternoon, can take longer than you expect. As general guidance:
- Send us your ship, your date and your scheduled arrival and all-aboard times when you enquire. Your guide follows your ship’s real timing on the day.
- Your time ashore is shorter than your ship’s time in port, because of the tender at both ends. We build the day on your time ashore.
- We always plan to have you back at the pier at least one hour before departure or the last tender. The ship’s all-aboard time always wins over the itinerary.
- Traffic between Villefranche and Monaco can be heavy in summer and on event days, so we keep the end of the day close to Villefranche.
- Carry your passport or ID and your cruise card. Monaco has no border checks with France, but you will need photo ID for the casino gaming rooms.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Villefranche to Monaco?
Monaco is about 15 kilometers, roughly 10 miles, from Villefranche-sur-Mer. By road it usually takes 25 to 40 minutes depending on the route and the traffic, and longer in peak summer or during major events such as the Grand Prix.
Is a private tour better than the ship’s Monaco excursion?
A private tour gives you your own guide and van, your own pace and your own choice of stops, with no waiting for a large group. Many guests also value the flexibility to linger in Eze or add Cap-Ferrat. Your guide plans around your ship’s timing and returns you to the pier at least one hour before the last tender.
Where does the guide meet us in Villefranche?
Your guide meets you at the tender landing in Villefranche-sur-Mer as you step ashore. We can also pick you up at any other cruise port or hotel on the Riviera.
What if our ship’s tender is late?
Your guide follows your ship’s schedule and waits for you at the pier. We adjust the order of the stops so the day still works, and the return time to the pier stays protected.
Is there a dress code for the Casino de Monte-Carlo?
Yes. For daytime visits, smart casual clothing is expected; beachwear, sportswear, tank tops, flip-flops and torn jeans are not accepted. From 7 pm the rules are stricter and gentlemen are asked to wear a jacket. The gaming rooms open in the afternoon, are for guests aged 18 and over, and require photo ID.
Can we see the Changing of the Guard in Monaco?
Yes. The ceremony takes place every day at 11:55 am in front of the Prince’s Palace, unless it rains or there is an exceptional event. We time a morning tour so you arrive on the Place du Palais a little early.
How many people can join and in which language?
Each private van takes up to 8 guests, and larger groups can travel with an additional vehicle. Tours are available in any language on request.
How much does a private Monaco tour from Villefranche cost?
Every tour is priced privately per vehicle, not per person, and tailored to your day. Quote on request: call +33 7 88 88 88 01 or email info@rivieracometrue.com.
