Between Nice and Monaco, tucked into a fold in the hills where the land drops suddenly to a bay of startling depth and clarity, Villefranche-sur-Mer has been surprising visitors for centuries. The harbour is deep enough to have berthed naval vessels and later cruise ships. The colour of the water in morning light sits somewhere between turquoise and green, something painters have been attempting to capture accurately since the nineteenth century with partial success.
The town is built on a steep hillside, a compact arrangement of orange and yellow facades above a waterfront that has barely changed since the eighteenth century. The covered street running beneath the old town, the Rue Obscure, dates to the thirteenth century and is one of the oldest medieval streets in continuous use in France. In times of bombardment the population sheltered here. Today it connects the seafront to the market and smells pleasantly of cool stone.
At the edge of the harbour, the Chapelle Saint-Pierre is a small building from the outside that contains, on every interior surface, the frescoes that Jean Cocteau painted in 1957 as a gift to the local fishermen. The scenes from the life of Saint Peter, rendered in Cocteau’s characteristic line, take ten minutes to visit and represent one of the finest small things on the Riviera.
What brings people back to Villefranche, beyond the town itself, is the bay. The Rade de Villefranche is one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, calm in almost all weather because of the encircling hills. Swimming from the town beach puts you in water of exceptional clarity. The light on the water at noon, when it turns almost white, is the light that Dufy and Matisse painted from the hillside above.
Villefranche is the preferred tender port for cruise ships visiting the Nice region. The tender journey from ship to shore takes about ten minutes and deposits passengers directly in front of the old town.
